Hints and requirements for writing a thesis

This document lists hints and requirements for writing a thesis. It is meant to guide you through the process and help you avoid common pitfalls.

Structure

The work must tell a story.
It must be clear,
- what the problem or question is,
- what approaches have been taken so far,
- what approach your own work takes and why exactly this approach,
- what results have been achieved with your own approach
- how these are to be classified and evaluated
- what else could be done in the future.
The part about your own work/own thoughts must be the larger part.

Projects and Research

Although we live in a three-dimensional environment, most media are presented on two-dimensional output devices.

The challenge of processing three-dimensional (3D) data for visualization including human interaction has always excited me.

How can we capture our 3D world?
How can we make it accessible for various applications?
How do we handle the loss of information when projecting 3D data onto two-dimensional (2D) surfaces?
How can we restore 3D information from 2D images?

Those questions drive me in my research.

In 2006, I graduated with honors in studies called “Media Systems” (see currently available comparable studies) at the Bauhaus University in Weimar in June 2006. Therefore, I was allowed to call myself a “Diplom-Mediensystemwissenschaftler”.

From July 2006, I was working as a PhD student in the Computer Graphics Group of Prof. Marc Alexa at the Technische Universität Berlin. In May 2012, I defended my PhD thesis titled “Real-time depth imaging”. The dissertation received an overall assessment of “magna cum laude” and allows me to call myself “Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften” (Dr.-Ing.).

Good teaching is one of my key ambitions. My teaching portfolio describes and illustrates how I want to teach and what I mean with good teaching in more detail. In order to further improve my teaching I did many trainings and further do. I have earned a qualified certificate for university didactic during my time at TU Berlin.
